When I was offered a complimentary hail oil treatment during my massage I was conflicted. On one hand, I was excited to try something new - something that could make my hair healthier. On the other hand, I was worried the oil might trigger my trichotillomania.
Having oily hair is a trigger for me because it gives me the green light to pull because - why not? The hair is already dirty, what difference is it going to make?
I decided to accept the treatment because, hey - I'm on vacation! I usually don't pull during vacations anyway and if I start to pull I know exactly what to do.
It. Was. Amazing.
I didn't know what to expect as it was my first time but I have to tell you that it was absolutely wonderful. It was a massage on your scalp! It made me smile thinking about the nurturing oils on my scalp, especially on my regrowth. I never really take moments to give my scalp the love it deserves - whenever I touch it it's because I'm pulling. This was a lovely end to an already spectacular massage.
After it was over I looked in the mirror at my reflection. I looked like someone who desperately needed a shower. I was told that I could keep the oil in for as long as I wanted so I decided to comb it through all of my hair and wear my hair in a slicked top knot.
As it turns out, my trichotillomania wasn't triggered at all. With my hair up and out of my face I was able to keep my hands out of my hair. And the best part? My scalp with getting some extra love too! I think I'll try hair oil again in the future.
