What I've learned from hosting BFRB support groups

It delights me to say that I have hosted a ton of virtual support groups over the last few years and I have loved every single one! Whether they were free through the BFRB Changemakers non-profit or within a paid membership to the BFRB Change Collective, I have learned something new, met new people, and left each meeting buzzing with happiness.

On the fence about attending one? Well, continue reading and maybe you'll change your mind by the end!

  1. Everyone is nervous at first

Attending a support group is a big deal! Do I turn my camera on? Should I ask questions? Do I belong? We've all had thoughts like those run through our minds but as the minutes pass you begin to realize that the answer to all of those questions is: YES!

I've been lucky enough to watch people become more comfortable and it truly is a beautiful sight to see! Cameras start turning on, mics are unmuted, and the conversation flows with ease. All because we realize that we're surrounded by people just like us. What is there to be nervous about?

  2. Everyone has valuable insights

Your lived experience is important for others to hear! Some of the most valuable conversations begin with someone sharing what has and what hasn't worked for them in the past.

I've taken notes and I've seen others do the same when people mention specific fidgets or tools! We've sent links in the chat! Everyone is interested in expanding their BFRB toolkit.

  3. Sharing about your experience makes you feel good

When the meeting first begins I typically but not always see nervous faces but as people introduce themselves I see smiles start to break out. So many of us have similar experiences! Whether it is the age we first began experiencing our BFRB to how we perform it, we're able to bond.

Something that may be surprising to others is how often we actually bust out laughing during our time together. Like we truly belly laugh a lot! Laughter really is the best medicine!

  4. Strangers do care about you and are proud of you

We come to these meetings for different reasons but one thing is for sure: we want to help each other. Helping could mean merely showing up or it could mean giving advice or words of encouragement. It could be connecting after the meeting and building a friendship.

I know I can speak for everyone when I say we want to hear your wins! Big or small! We want to clap for you while you share. We want to let you know that we do care about you and are proud of you!

I hope that the reasons listed above help nudge you to attend a support group in the future because they really are the best. Maybe I'll see you at one of mine?! :-)
